Imphal, November 14 2014 :
A four-day tripartite meet on the Tectonics of Indo-Burmese Arc (IBA), which kick started in Mizoram University, concluded at Manipur University yesterday.
The meet focused on the need for carrying out geo-scientific studies to understand the earthquake occurrence processes, evolution and tectonics of IBA and on the need of regional cooperation between India, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The meet was attended by delegates from the United States, Myanmar and India.
Twelve presentations covering the present information in hand on various aspects of the tectonics of IBA were made on November 10 .
The second day was devoted to raising unanswered scientific issues concerning tectonics of IBA and the approaches to be adopted for developing answers of different queries.
Future plan for better understanding of the hazard potential of the IBA was discussed in the post-lunch session of the day.
Recommendations of the meet included delineation of two transacts covering Bangladesh, India and Myanmar passing through Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur.
The recommended study components along these transact included seismology, GPS geodesy, subsurface imaging, tectonic geomorphology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeomagnetism and structure.
Working groups and participating universities/institutes from the three countries were also identified.
These recommendations will be submitted to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt of India for consideration.
Thereafter, research proposals pertaining to study components will be evolved for consideration of the Ministry.
Dr Leonardo Seeber of United States, Dr VK Gahalaut of National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, Prof Arun Kumar of Manipur University and Prof RP Tiwari of Mizoram University will co-ordinate the formulation of the research proposals.
Dr Soe Thura Tun will organize the second tripartite meeting in Myanmar in February, 2015.The meet was sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt of India.
