Tardy project work worries education minister

Education minister S Rajen Singh on Sunday made spot assessment of work progress of the Government Polytechnics at Imphal East and Thoubal districts as well as the Government Engineering College at Khangarok in Heirok, Thoubal district.
Speaking to the media during a visit, minister Rajen informed that work orders for were issued for construction of eight new Government Polytechnics in Thoubal, Imphal East, Ukhrul, Bishnupur, Chandel, Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Senapati districts in 2015 .
While stating that purpose of his visit on Sunday is to ensure early completion of construction of the technical institutions so that the academic sessions begin as and when the situation is conducive, he, however, expressed dissatisfaction over the work progress.
The project executing department has been instructed to release the pending bills of the contractors depending on liabilities of existing status of the structures, Rajen said and lamented that delay in completing the institutions has affected the academic atmosphere of the inspiring students.
Had these structures been completed in time, a batch of poly-technicians could be seen in the eight districts, he maintained while confiding that project works being undertaken in different districts would be reviewed.
An agreement between the contractors, executing agency and the government will be signed so responsibilities could be fixed against the faulty parties, he affirmed.
Referring to Dhanamanju- ri University where various structural constructions are underway, Rajen said that contractors and departmental officials concerned have been instructed to complete and hand over the same in time.
With regard to a recent case of collapse of a pillar of the old building of DM College of Science, he informed that subsequent to his inspection visit along with a ministerial team necessary arrangements are being made for renovating the structure.
Minister Rajen was accompanied by Education commissioner M Harekrishna, Government Polytechnic Takyelpat principal, Education Engineering Wing chief engineer Saratchandra Singh, officials of the department and others.
