Imphal, February 11 2019:
Dolly Hawaibam became one among 107 environmental conservationists who enthusiastically maintain a special site for planting trees during private ceremonies like marriage and child birth, at a hillock of Tonelok at Heingang Reserve Forest.
Just like every member in the Committee for Greenery Campaign did, she had also planted a Heibung (xanthochymus) tree sapling on the day of her Heijingpot yesterday.
The Greenery Campaign, the campaign under which the planting of trees are done on special occasions at the said site, was launched by a group of people who work in the Forest, Department along with their family members on September 3, last year.
So far 107 trees have been planted at the site under the campaign.
Interestingly, the committee members who planted tree saplings are taking great care of the trees they planted by coming at least on the 3rd of every month and attending to the trees and plants.

Besides this, every member also contribute Rs 100 every month in addition to the one time membership contribution of Rs 300, for maintaining the site.
The Committee also hired/employed gardeners for the preservation and protection of the trees at the site.
Talking to The Sangai Express, Dolly asserted that she is worried about the growing impact of deforestation and climate change in the State as well as in the global stage.
Saying that the Heibung tree which she planted yesterday has almost established a personal link with her as it was planted on the day of her Heijingpot, she said that she is fully committed towards preserving and protecting the tree while appealing all to encourage and get involved in any types of environmental conservation activities.
Meanwhile, Elangbam Home Singh, RO (in charge), Forest, Sadar Hills Range, conveyed that the Greenery Campaign was launched by a group of individuals who work in Forest Departments along with their family members last year as an initiative for planting tree saplings during private ceremonies or memorable events.
He continued that the campaign was launched with the strong belief that introducing the trend of planting trees on one's valuable private moments or events in the State, will put more weight to the effort of environmental conservation as it inculcates a sense of the need to protect the environment through cultural practices.
Such initiatives will add more values to the private event itself apart from making a contribution towards protecting the environment from every individual's capacity, he added.
Appealing all to take more interest in such initiative instead of giving huge attention to materialistic things during private ceremonies like child birth and wedding ceremonies, the RO informed that the imitative can be extended to other hills and forests as well.
