Imphal, July 09 2021:
Acknowledging that lack of irrigation canal in Khurai has been causing scarcity of water for agricultural activities, Khurai MLA L Susindro urged the farmers in the constituency to keep two-three feet space free for constructing canal so as to ensure irrigation of agricultural land.
Speaking on the sidelines of inspecting the initiatives of providing irrigation water to farmlands using electric water pumps, Susindro lamented that only three out of five RLI pumps supplied by the department concerned are functional.
As the three pumps are not compatible for irrigating the large farmland in the constituency, 23 electric pumps were handed over to farmers' organisations to draw water from nearby sources for irrigating agricultural lands, he informed.
Despite drawing of water to provide irrigation for agriculture, farmlands located far from the river take long hours to irrigate their lands due to lack of canals, he explained, while adding that supply of irrigation water to farmlands that had been taken up few days back have provided water to 35/40 farmlands.
There is hope that agricultural areas in Khurai could avail water if supplying of irrigation water continues for the next 15 days.
In order not to delay planation of seasonal crops in future, farmers need to construct small canals to avail water for irrigating their fields.
All possible help will be provided for taking up such initiative, he assured.
