The Ukhrul District Working Journalists' Association (UDWJA) organized a simple function at its Viewland office today to celebrate the 34th foundation day of Manipur Hills Journalists' Union (MHJU), which was observed simultaneously across the hill districts in the State.
UDWJA is a federating unit of MHJU, reports our correspondent.
UDWJA members led by its president Thotshang Shaiza and former MHJU president Sothing Shimray, were joined by councillor Ukhrul DCC HA Vareishang, UDLSA secretary Alek Muivah, CMO Ukhrul Dr AS Kapangring and NHM Ukhrul PO Ramayo Chiphang, who extended warm greetings to all the members of MHJU on attaining 34 years of its relentless service towards the society.
As part of the observance, an interactive programme was also organized to recall the importance of journalism in the district as well as to improve the conditions under which Ukhrul based journalists strive to perform their regular duties.
Speaking at the occasion, HA Vareishang said that the relevance of journalism in the contemporary society needs to be recognised in order to attract youngsters to the profession, adding that mass support is a must to help promote the local newspapers.
Drawing certain similarities between judiciary and journalism, Alek Muivah stressed that both the professions are equally challenging and observed that principles and moral ethics should be the hallmark of journalists and legal professionals to truly serve the society.
Meanwhile, Dr Kapangring acknowledged the vital role played by journalists in not only disseminating information to the public but also in moulding public's opinion in various situations.
Ramayo Chiphang opined that journalism in its true sense is considered a profession that stands for truth and justice.
