Imphal, March 06 2023:
Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) has successfully performed kidney transplant surgery on a patient from Myanmar for the second time on February 22 .
Notably, Shija performed North-East India's first kidney transplant of an international patient in December 2019 .
A statement issued by Takhellambam Premkumar, Deputy Manager, Business-Development, SHRI has shared that the transplant team consisted of Dr Guliver Potsangbam, consultant nephrologist; Dr Somorendro Paonam, consultant urologist and renal transplant surgeon; Dr Mahele Maharabam, consultant urologist, along with highly skilled anaesthetists, nurses and other support staff.
The 55-year-old woman from Mandalay, Myanmar had chronic kidney disease and had been on maintenance hemodialysis for a couple of months.
The lack of good transplant centers in Myanmar prompted the patient's family to seek transplant abroad.
They came in contact with the Shija facilitator in Myanmar.
On February 22, the patient underwent live-related kidney transplantation at Shija.
Her eldest son was her kidney donor.
The donor's kidney was removed by keyhole surgery.
Both the patient and the donor recovered well after the surgery.
The donor was discharged from the hospital on February 25 and the patient on March 1 in stable conditions.
The statement added that they are still in Imphal for post-transplant care.
Reportedly, this was the 80th kidney transplant at Shija.
Among them, 2 were from Myanmar, 6 from Nagaland and 72 from Manipur.
It may also be mentioned that SHRI is the first hospital in the entire North East to have performed a successful ABO incompatible kidney transplant.
It is worth mentioning that the cost of kidney transplant is four times higher in Bangkok and ten times higher in Singapore in comparison with Shija.
The patient and family who reached Imphal via Kolkata also pointed out that direct flights between Mandalay and Imphal would make their travel easier and more cost-effective.
Furthermore, they were delighted by the presence of a Burmese translator at Shija.
