Free Meetei Mayek course begins at Jiribam

A 10-day free Meetei Mayek course, under the aegis of Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL), Kangleipak and Department Of Language Planning and Implementation, started at Champanagar Awang Leikai Community Hall, Jiribam today.
Pradhan Dibong GP RK Nobinsana Singh, N Manikanta president Tail Club Champanagar Jiribam and president MEELAL Y Biren Meetei attended the inaugural function as presidium members.
Speaking at the event, Huirem Loikhomba Meetei, asst gen secy, MEELAL said that the 10-day course is being organised to promote and educate the indigenous script to people.
Meetei Mayek is being taught at university level now, he said while expressing that there are demands to develop the script which are not yet addressed by the Government.
Demands for inclusion and depiction of the indigenous script in the Indian currency and insertion of the words "Meetei Mayek" in place of "Bengali script" mentioned in the Manipur Official Language Act 1979 are not yet fulfilled, he added.
