Imphal, August 03 2009:
A delegation of leaders of Manipur People's Party (MPP) today met with the state Governor, Gurbachan Jagat in connection with the developments following the exposure of Tehelka news magazine and urged him to dismiss the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government.
President of MPP Dr Nimaichand Luwang, advisors Dr L Chandramani, O Joy and Th Chaoba, spokesperson RK Anand, general secretaries Y Mangi, Kh Itomcha and N Sanajaoba were in the delegation.
The meeting between the Governor and the eight-member delegation lasted over an hour which began from 4 pm and continued till 5.15 pm.
During a press conference held at the Party office after the meeting with the Governor, President Dr Nimaichand Luwang said that the delegation told the Governor about the misleading statement given by the Chief Minister in the Assembly regarding the shootout at Khwairamband market.
They also informed him what the Chief Minister had said that there is no other alternative than killing.
So many incidents of killing people whether they were insurgents or sympathisers or plain innocents in fake encounters had taken place.
But since the people could not get any evidence, they have been unable to do anything except debating over such incidents, Dr Luwang narrated.
However, tehelka.com has exposed the fake encounter of BT road with its damning report and photographs.
After seeing the report and the photographs, anguished people have now risen and launched agitations.
Now tension is high among the people, the delegation told the
Governor.
The delegation urged the Governor to act as per consitutional provisions in regard to the misleading statement given by the Chief Minister in the Assembly.
The SPF government never pays heed to the appeals of the people, the delegation told the Governor.
The MPP placed five points of demands in the memorandum sumitted to the Governor.
They are: a judicial inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court to investigate the entire incident and cancelling the magisterial inquiry; FIR case be registered against the police personnel and investigation of the case be handed over to CBI for fairness and transparency; all police personnel invoved in the incident be placed under suspension immediately; appropriate compensation be paid to the families of those killed and injured and the irresponsible SPF ministry be dismissed immeidately.
Dr Nimaichand Luwang praised the Governor, Gurbachan Jagat who reportedly gave them a warm welcome and also gave a patient hearing to the tales of woe narrated to him by the party delegation.
The Governor felt pleased that a detailed report about the happenings in Manipur was given to him and informed the delegation that he would read the memorandum carefully and he will also hear the government's version, and hoped that other political parties may also give their own reports.
After considering all these, a concrete dicision will be taken, the Governor is reported to have told the MPP delegation.
O Joy, RK Anand, Dr L Chandramani, Th Chaoba etc spoke during the press conference.
The MPP will stage a sit in protest at the gate of the party office on August 5 urging for its demands be fulfilled.
