In a frightening incident, Officer-in-Charge of Nambol Police Station, Lisam Premchand sustained serious injuries after he and his team was attacked by locals of Nambol Chingmai while the OC-led police team was trying to raid a house in the locality today around 6.30 pm.
The raid was to be conducted based on reliable information that a large quantity of contraband ganja was being stored at the house.
The incensed mob also damaged a Gypsy car belonging to Nambol Police Station and later set ablaze.
Police sources said when the OC-led police team tried to raid the house, family members of the house who were present at that time alerted nearby locals by shouting 'Mi faba lak ae' and 'Mi hatkadoure' .
Hearing the shouts, nearby locals holding knives, sticks and sharp weapons on their hands rushed to the area.
Seeing the irate mobs, the police personnel revealed that they were police coming to raid the house for seizure of contraband ganja.
However, the mob refused to recognize them, forcing the police team to fire several rounds of bullets in the air to disperse the angry mob.
However, instead of retreating, the mob gathered towards the police personnel and started attacking them with their weapons.
In the fierce attack, the OC felt unconscious on the ground after he was hit by stick on his head.
Not only this, the mob also took into custody the other five police personnel along with their weapons, the sources disclosed.
On hearing the news that the team of OC had been attacked, a team of Bishnupur District Police commando arrived at the spot and fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets in their bid to rescue the police team.
After using different kinds of riot control methods, the commando force finally put the situation under control.
They then pulled out the body of OC Premchand who was still lying unconscious and put him into a vehicle.
The other five personnel who were taken into custody by the mob were also rescued.
Reports said no weapon issued to all the OC-led police team was found lost.
However, it is not clear whether a wireless set fitted on the Gypsy car was taken out by the mob or it was burnt down along with the vehicle.
When the commando team came out from the spot after rescuing all the police personnel, they were attacked with stones from different directions.
Police have not been able to enter the area till late night today.
However, it is said that a massive team of police will be sent to the area next morning.
The condition of the injured OC Premchand is said to be in critical.
