Imphal, April 17 2012:
Extending wishes to the people of the state, the proscribed revolutionary group PREPAK has called for conserving the cultural heritage sites on the occasion of World Heritage Day which falls on Wednesday.
In the statement, PREPAK mentioned that the observation of the day was adopted by the 22nd General Conference of the UNESCO in November 1983 after the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) organised an international symposium on the matter on April 18, 1982 and submitted a resolution to the UNESCO to observe the day.
Since then the world has been observing the day as International Monuments and Sites every year.
This year also, the world is observing the day under the theme "World Heritage and Sustainable Development: The Role of Local Communities" with an aim to motivate community participation in local level around the globe.
In Kangleipak too, there are many historical monuments and sites which need to be conserved well for the future generation.
In many instances, many cultural and historical monuments and sites have been destroyed or demolished during the Seven Years Devastation (Chahi Taret Khuntakpa), Anglo-Kanglei War and other occasions.
Even after the forced annexation of Manipur into the Indian Union, Assam Rifles have been occupying the sacred Kangla under their grip thereby preventing any conservatory actions both from the side of the state government and the people until 2004.Shockingly, the Indian government did not include the Kangla in the list of 21 Heritage sites submitted to the UNESCO for conservation under the UNESCO's plan.
This shows the mentality of the India government and its treatment to the state, the statement added.
Even if the India government ignores Kangla, people of the state have its full right to conserve the historical site for future generation.
It is their obligation to conserve such sites in the state.
Besides Kangla, there are many other sites and monuments in the state which can be conserved.
Chibu Nung at CCpur erected by King Chandrakirti; Lungpha hillock at Phungyar which is the origin of Tangkhul brethren; Thanlon Cave at Tamenglong where the Kabui communities originated; Funeral place of King Gambhir Singh at Canchipur; Kainaching; the abode of Marjing at Heingang; the abode of Thangjing at Moirang; Hiyangthang Lairembi; Thongam Mondum, the abodes at Nongmaiching hill, Koubru hill and other religious sites; Haying Khongbal; Mongbahanba; the abode of Lainingthou Sanamahi at Wangoi; historical sites at Mayang Imphal; Chengei; Nungei; fort at Kharam Pallel and local deities at every villages are some historical sites which can be conserved under the UNESCO, it mentioned, urged the people to take active role in conserving such cultural and historical sites and monuments for the future.
