Imphal, October 16 2019:
Expressing concern at the attempt to erect memorial stones with controversial inscriptions for the Anglo-Kuki War 1917-1919 centenary commemoration, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has stated that it regards the move as uncalled for and wrong.
A statement issued by the secretary, IPR of UCM today mentioned that it finds the apparent lack of attempt by the learned Kuki scholars and intellectuals to correct the misinterpretation of a rebellion as Anglo-Kuki war, condemnable and disappointing.
UCM conveyed that it will be the right choice for all the communities to strive for a common goal so as to enure peace and tranquillity in the State and reasoned that no community can make any individual claims as to what belongs to whom.
If the Naga claims the land as its own, if the Kuki claims the land as its own and if the Meitei make the same claims, then there is no future for Manipur, it said.
UCM explained that there are no areas in the valley where tribals had settled or built settlements but till date, the Meiteis have been peacefully coexisting with them without raising any issues.
However, by sidelining such reality, the attempt by the Kuki to erect memorial stone and claiming the land as their ancestral land is immensely disappointing, it said and urged the Kuki elders and intellectuals to take a step back and think properly and to clarify any misunderstanding.
Pointing out that the Meitei community share a common origin with the tribals and that the two cannot be separated, UCM asserted that it is ready to face any challenge or threat to the peace and tranquillity among the communities residing in the State.
It then urged the Government to intervene in a timely manner and clip such communal issues at its bud before the issue blows out of proportion.
UCM then clarified that it has utmost regards and appreciation for the Kuki people who sacrificed their lives in the rebellion but explained that it wishes for the Kuki brethren to present the event in the right manner to rid of any confusion and to leave behind a positive message for the future generations as well.
