ICAR issues new pest control measure

In view of the recent outbreak of white-backed plant hopper in the rice growing areas of Imphal valley reported in local newspapers and television and control measures which were highlighted, a team of ICAR scientists visited and underwent pest surveillance in the rice fields.
The team of ICAR scientists conducted the pest surveillance in rice fields of Imphal West and Imphal East districts, extensively in Langjing, Patsoi, Moidangpok, Sekmai.
Pungdongbam, Leimakhong Mapal and Sawombung and infestation of hopper complex were observed in the fields.
The infestation reached 'Economic Threshold Level' for all fields.
Hopper burn symptoms were also observed.
ICAR further stated that through an oversight and pressure to recommend control measures, the Agriculture Department had included the insecticide Carbaryl 50% WP.
However, the said insecticide is banned.
Since it cannot be sold in the market, the same will not be available for farmers.
In view of which, better recommendations/substitutes are available although awareness of farmers, suitable measures, etc should be undertaken.
