Plant and grow trees for life, says EM Edmund Chiphang

Executive Member (EM) Ukhrul ADC Edmund Chiphang while speaking at the observation of World Environment Month at Teinem Village urged the villagers to plant and grow trees to restore the environment and secure sustainable food & livestock for all.
Edmund Chiphang flagged off the tree plantation programme in the presence of Councillor VL Khayinghor, DFO Ukhrul Headman, Ngamchuipei, Pastor WS Raingam and several Village Authority members.
Before the flag off ceremony, he said that the environment as well as the ecological balance in the district is changing rapidly.
Stating that deforestation is one of the main contributors to climate change in the region, he asserted that anthropogenic activities are continuously exploiting the nature without considering the adverse effect it would bring on all the living beings.
Edmund also said that investing huge sum of money for plantation drive would be meaningless if the plants are not nurtured.
Shanngam Shali DFO, Ukhrul stated that the month long observation is not just about plantation drive but also to rejuvenate the forest land and create awareness about the importance of preserving forest to the masses.
He said Teinem is among the few villages of Ukhrul district which took up the drive.
Villagers, school students and Church leaders of Teinem village planted over 2000 tree saplings of bokul, ashoka tree, terminalia myriocarpa, cedrellatoona, champaca mechellia and perkia at different location of the village.
Meanwhile, a two days awareness programme on environmental issues held at Sacred Hr Sec School Hungpung, Ukhrul under the banner "Nature learning Centre" for the school students concluded today.
Addl Principal Chief Conservator, Anurag Bajpai who attend as the chief guest of the awareness programme expounded on the need to plant more trees for combating global warming.
Principal of SHHS Fr Gabriel Mayopam expressed gratitude to the officials of Forest Department for enlightening the students about the contemporary global issue.
He then felicitated the participating Department Officers; Anurag Bajpai, Waikhom Romabai, Shanngam for attending the programme.
As part of the programme 20 agar tree were also planted in the school premises.
The programme was organized by Ukhrul Forest Division, Govt of Manipur.
