Imphal, November 29 2013 :
Demanding strict action against one SI Nilamani and his team of Imphal East Narcotics Cell, Transporters and Drivers' Council (TDC), Manipur has threatened to suspend transportation of rice along NH-37 if the demand is not met.
Talking to media persons in this regard at the office of TDC at MG Avenue here today, President of the Council H Ranjit said that the vehicles for escort personnel were not provided due to requisition of a large number of vehicles for the ongoing Sangai Festival.
As per the instruction of Home Department, the escort personnel were accommodated in the trucks which were supposed to ferry rice for Food Corporation of India (FCI).
Altogether 18 trucks left Imphal along NH-37 on November 20.The trucks, after getting loaded, headed to Imphal on November 27 along with the escort personnel.
However, one truck bearing registration number MN 01-8998 driven by one Ibochou went missing after it reached Imphal.
Previously, it was assumed that the truck might have been hijacked by some underground outfit.
However, it was later known that a team of Imphal East Narcotics Cell had actually detained the truck near Porompat Service Station.
The police officials could not give any concrete reason for the detention, he stated.
Ranjit decried the detention as an illegal conduct of the police trying to tarnish his image.
No banned product was recovered from the truck.
Moreover, the TDC has not been charged of transporting any illegal item along the national highways all these years.
The transporters and drivers would suspend transportation of rice if the Chief Minister, Home Minister and DGP do not take appropriate action against the erring police officials by December 2, he demanded.
