Imphal, August 29, 2012:
Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar today inspected roads and other construction works within Saikul AC and assured the people that the roads within the AC would be modernised sooner than later.
The Minister was accompanied by Saikul AC MLA, Yamthong Haokip and various other officials of the Works department.
The team led by the minister has also inspected the condition of 16 kilometre long Sagolmang-Molkon road and the work progress of RCC bridge construction over Ithoi River at Molkon.
Addressing a public meeting later at Saikul Bazar shed, Works Minister Kh Ratankumar said the Congress Government of the State is committed to construction of roads in the hill areas.
He confided that the Government is planning to upgrade the 174 km long Churachandpur-Seijang, 50km long Rengpang-Tamenglong and 150 km long Ukhrul-Tadubi roads to National Highways.
Admitting that the work progress in the construction of NH-37 by the BRO is unsatisfactory, Ratan said the BRO failed to materialise its assurance that the construction of the road would be over before monsoon this year.
Since the construction work of the NH-37 is monitored by a committee which has been set up as per a directive of a Court, the Government could not interfere much in monitoring the work, he said.
However, the Government is pressing the Ministry of Defence, to which the BRO belongs, for the early completion of the road.
Dr Kh Ratankumar said that the commitment letter of the Border Road Organisation (BRO), which assured the completion of the construction of NH-37 by March 2013, has been sent to the Ministry of Defence.
He added that process for the construction of Kangpok-pi-Tamei road and Old Cachar road has been initiated under the Inter-District Road Connectivity of the NEC.
Ratankumar said Sagol-mang-Molkon road would be constructed under a special package while IVRs within Saikul area would be renovated under SPA for the financial year 2012-13. The team led by the Works Minister also included Principal Secretary (Works) Ram Muivah, Additional CE of PWD, Pradipkumar Mukherjee and other sub-ordinate staff of the Works department.
