Imphal, March 26:
A joint statement of the presidents of Raphei Katamnao Long, Zingsho Katamnao Long, Zingtun Tangkhul Katamnao Long and Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long urged the Government to remove the forests beats from their areas.
Maintaining that the forests in these areas are governed by customary laws and practices since time immemorial, the statement asserted that people of these areas are therefore not liable to pay any tax to the Government for these forests.
The statement added that taxing for these forests amounts to daylight robbery as these forests do not come under the purview of the Reserved Forest Act.
