Imphal, May 25 2018:
The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has strongly condemned the response of Chief Minister N Biren Singh regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, and has demanded the State Government to oppose the same.
A press release issued by the information and publicity secretary of AMSU today stated that various CSOs and students' organisations of North East region have been opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 tooth and nail.
It claimed that North East Students Organisation (NESO) even submitted various memos to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) which came to the North East and to the Prime Minister as well demanding the Bill to be revoked.
On the other hand, AMSU also submitted memos to the Governor and the Chief Minister condemning the Bill and demanding the Government to oppose the same.
However, the Chief Minister shockingly responded that the Bill is based only in Assam and it would not affect Manipur, which is quite disappointing, it claimed and added that AMSU will never accept such a Bill.
It stated that AMSU views the uncaring attitude of the State Government to the Bill which has the potential of causing immense socio-political impacts on the people of the State, is akin to compromising/dooming the future generations of the indigenous people.
It further claimed that the CM's response is similar to letting Manipur fall into the hands of foreigners and warned the authority not to invite movements like the ones following the 1980 and 1994 agreements between AMSU and the State and Central Government.
Stating that it is the responsibility of the State Government to oppose such a Bill taking the welfare of its people into consideration, it appealed the leaders of the State to think and perform according to the wishes of the people.
