Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen today informed that the Ministry of Rural Development, GoI has released 199.20 MTs of food grain (rice) for distribution to the beneficiaries of Annapurna under National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) for 3320 beneficiaries against the existing 8590 beneficiaries for six months.
In order to ensure proper distribution of rice to the beneficiaries under Annapurna, the Minister expressed that the District Social Welfare Officers of concerned districts of the Department in consultation with the Deputy Commissioner /Village Panchayat/ Municipal Council/Village Chief/ Autonomous District Council/ Local bodies of the districts concerned distributed directly to the beneficiaries commencing from March 7, 2020 and is still going on.
The Minister also stated that during the distribution, Geo-tagged photos are taken by the concerned DSWOs to maintain transparency.
It may be mentioned here that Annapurna Scheme, launched on April 1, 2000, aimed at providing food security to meet the requirement of those senior citizens who, though eligible, have remained uncovered under the National Old Age Pension Scheme (NOAPS) .
Under the Annapurna Scheme, 10 kgs of food grains per month are provided free of cost to the beneficiary.
The number of persons to be benefited from the scheme are, in the first instance, 20% of the persons eligible to receive a pension under NOAPS in States/UTs.
