The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the killing of Thokchom (O) Rabina has today asserted that Rabina was killed by stray bullets of the police commandos yesterday at Khwairamband Keithel during the reported encounter with a suspected militant while also demanding punishment for the security personnel involved in the killing.
The JAC for brutal killing of Thokchom (O) Rabina was formed today during a public meeting at Lamshang Praja High School.
The public meeting was attended by members of the Macha Leima, AMKIL, All Manipur Nupi Marup, Apunba Lup, UCM, Khwairamband Keithel Sinpham Amasung Saktam Kanba Lup and various other civil society organisations.
Khundrakpam Shyamkesho and Ch Somorjit have been appointed as the president and the secretary of the JAC.
A member of the JAC, Sinam (O) Nongleima demanded that the government should institute judicial inquiry into the killing.
She said that the act of opening gunfire at a crowded place like Khwairamband Bazar could only be carried out by people who do not have respect for the dignity and rights of the people.
It has become more complicate to live in an armed conflict situation.
The militants also ought to respect the rights of the people, she said adding that it would be worst if the people turn against them too.
The meeting also decided to entrust the JAC to submit a representation to the Chief Minister.
Spelling out the demands to be incorporated in the memorandum, the JAC secretary, Ch Somorjit said that Rabina was hit by the bullets of the police commandos and the government should punish the guilty personnel.
He also said that judicial inquiry into the incident should also be demanded.
The JAC has also decided to launch intense agitation if their demands are not fulfilled by the government.
Somorjit also said that whether the body of Rabina be claimed or not will remain with the steps taken by the JAC.
He said the memorandum will be submitted tomorrow as the CM is said to have attended a Cabinet meeting today.
Meanwhile, the dead body of Chungkham Sanjit alias Romesh alias Bobo alias Chingkhei remains still at the RIMS morgue as family members did not turn up to claim the body.
At the same time, the 24 hours bandh called by the women vendors of Imphal in protest against the shooting in public place yesterday has went off peacefullyin Imphal area.
All shops and market places in the heart of Imphal were closed.
Normal life was said to be badly affected by the bandh in Khurai area, where the slain UG suspect belongs to.
