"Sex selective abortion prohibited under PC & PNDT Act 2014"

A two day State level workshop on "Effective implementation of PC & PNDT Act 1994", organised by Naoyok Naokol Lup, Senjam Chirang, Imphal West district, was launched today at State Youth Hostel, Khuman Lampak today.
Mayanglangjing Zilla Parishad Member, Keisam Sohodeba Singh graced the workshop as chief guest while Naoyok Naokol Lup president Irungbam Ranjan Singh attended the workshop as president and retired Director, Prosecution Ngangom Tejkumar Singh and social activist Mutum Churamani Meetei as guests of honour.
Enlightening the gathering about the workshop, Dr Arun of Family Welfare Department said that the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt of India implemented the Pre Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC & PNDT) Act 1944 to put a check on illegal sex determination and stop female feticide.
He further informed that although the Act was implemented in 1994 in other parts of the country, Manipur recently implemented the Act only in 2013.The workshop has been conducted to raise proper awareness about the Act, he said while adding that, earlier, the rate of identifying the sex of a foetus through ultrasound and sex selective abortion was very high in some States.
The Act serves penalty to offenders including the clinic and parents thus preventing the use of sex selection techniques after conception, he further stated.
According to 2011 census report of Manipur, 97 females are born for every 100 males.
This ratio should go in parallel, he added.
Dr Arun added that major and minor violations under PC& PNDT Act 1994 could lead to serious punishments, from paying fines to imprisonment.
