Imphal, March 23 2020:
Judicial Magistrate, First Class, Imphal West II rejected the bail application filed by retired IAS officer Abujam Tombikanta today and instead sent him to judicial remand till April 6 for attempting to murder his own wife and children.
The accused Abujam Tombikanta (61) s/o (L) Kanglenjao of Moidangpok Mamang Leikai was produced before the Court today afternoon for the necessary hearing, after the completion of five days police custody remand at Patsoi PS .
The case began against the retd officer after his wife lodged a police complaint claiming that on March 18, at around 8.20 pm, Tombikanta and his younger brother, Abujam Gulamani, as well as his (Gulamani's) two sons and some unknown individuals arrived at her home.
The complainant alleged that at that time, she and her children, (her eldest daughter, her son and her minor daughter) were having dinner and as such, when the group came, her eldest daughter went out to open the gate.
However, suddenly, the group rushed inside and closed the door before attacking her son with Thanghai (sword), Sagol Kangjei (Polo mallet) and steel rods which were lying in the house without any rhyme or reason.
The complaint alleged that she tried to call for help but the mob blocked her and began assaulting them.
She claimed that the people even kicked her son on his abdomen and Tombikanta himself kicked his own son on his private part.
After her son collapsed on the ground crying in agony, the complainant claimed that she was somehow able to push aside the attackers and call for help from her neighbours.
Following her complaint, a case was registered by Patsoi PS, the IO said, adding that during the course of investigation, the accused husband/father was thoroughly interrogated and he ultimately admitted to the charges levelled against him.
Tombikanta disclosed that during the incident, his younger brother Gulamani and his other associates held back his son's hands while he beat his own son with the weapons.
He also admitted that he kicked his daughter after she tried to stop the physical attack on her brother and as such, she is undergoing treatment in a hospital.
The IO further submitted before the Court that a number of witnesses, including the neighbours, were examined and they revealed that there were many previous instances/ incidents when the accused had beaten and harassed his family members without any reason, and prayed to the Court for judicial remand for proper investigation of the case.
On the other hand, the counsel of the accused filed a remand objection petition as well as a bail application.
After hearing the submissions of the IO and the counsel, the Court rejected the bail application and instead remanded the retired IAS officer to judicial custody till April 6 .
