Imphal, July 19 2018:
Asserting that the State is currently embroiled in a number of sensitive issues and deliberation on these issues would take many days, CPI Manipur State Council has today demanded the State Government to extend the Monsoon session of the State Assembly which will be held for just two days beginning tomorrow.
The party termed the recent visit of the State Government's High Power Delegation, headed by Chief Minister N Biren to New Delhi as unfruitful, saying that they could not convince the Central Government leaders to accept any of the proposals made by them.
Addressing a press meet held today at Irawat Bhawan, here1, CPI, Manipur State Council member Dr M Nara pointed out that there are many burning issues such as the long standing MU impasse, Border Pillar controversy, Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 and ILP issue.
He went to observe that all these issues are major issues which demand thorough deliberation in the State Assembly.
The long standing impasse of MU has affected the university and all other educational institutes in the State.
It is high time for all the political parties in the State to resolve the matter with collective wisdom, leaving aside political differences.
Securing the future of Manipur University and students means saving Manipur and its people, he said.
Noting that Assembly sessions in every State should have at least 55 sittings in a year as per a directive of the Indian Parliament, Nara demanded the State Government to extend the upcoming Monsoon session.
Nara asked the State Government if it is only interested in implementing a Bill which would legalise liquor in the State.
CPI supports the common demand of MUSU, MUTA and MUSA to remove MU's incumbent VC AP Pandey first before initiating any enquiry against him, Nara said and added that the impasse cannot be resolved until the VC is removed.
Criticizing the BJP and State Government's call not to politicise the MU issue, he alleged that it was BJP and the VC who politicised the university.
There are reports about investment of lakhs of rupees to establish BJP and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) units in MU, Dr Nara said.
Terming the rule of BJP and BJP-led coalition Governments as dictatorial and fascist, Nara accused the BJP led NDA Government of trying to introduce the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 coercively in the Parliament despite strong opposition from all Opposition parties.
He then expressed his view that the consistent effort of the people of Manipur for introduction of ILP Bill or a similar mechanism to protect their identity, cultures and other values will be rendered futile once the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 comes into force in the State.
CPI, Manipur State Council State Secretary L Sotinkumar mentioned that the massive support given to the 48 hours geeral strike called by MUSU by several student organizations and general public proves that the people of Manipur wants VC AP Pandey out of MU.
