Imphal, May 18 2017:
Delhi Manipur Society has urged DoNER Minister Dr Jitendra Singh to declare Patriots' Day and Ningol Chakkouba as restricted holidays in the interest of a large number of Manipuris working in Central Government offices.
In a written request to the DoNER Minister, Delhi Manipur Society said, "Patriots' Day is being observed annually on August 13 to commemorate the sacrifices of the great leaders who were hung to death for waging war against the British imperialists.
Ningol Chakkouba is a festival where married daughters are invited to their parental homes for a grand feast.
Ningol Chakkouba festival coincides with Bahi Dhuj which is celebrated in most parts of the country" .
The society said that recognition of the age-old culture of Ningol Chakkouba and historically significant day of the Patriots' Day by the Centre will help in strengthening the bond of recognition and integration among the people of the country.
It added that necessary arrangements may be also initiated to include the Patriots' Day and Ningol Chakkouba as restricted holidays in the official calendar of the Government of India from 2018 onwards.
