Imphal, June 15 2018:
Shiv Sena Manipur State Unit has claimed that the large sum of funds sanctioned for the river bed cleaning and other related works have all gone down the drain as those measures have failed to prevent the recent flood.
Speaking to media persons at the party's office at Babupara today, Shiv Sena Manipur State Unit president M Tombi Singh said that all the money spent by the present Government in connection with riverbed cleaning works have been lost.
He claimed that in the past, people used to plant trees on the riverbank so as to slow down the water current of the rivers.
But today, rainfall for three days is enough to create flood in Manipur, he said and added that the monsoon season will hit the State soon and it would not be right to pile all the responsibility for handling the potential flood problems of the State to the Government.
Tombi said that it is imperative for all the political parties to work together on a long term plan to effectively eliminate the problems of flood in the State.
He further claimed that the Government's policy and programme have completely failed.
If the roads were raised well above the river bank levels and then black topped, the problem of frequent flood would diminish to a large extent.
Sitting or standing near the riverbank during flood and assessing the situation will not solve the problem, he jabbed.
He continued that providing some rice, kerosene and some essential items is not the solution but eliminating the reason for the flood is.
On the other hand, Tombi lauded Water Resources Minister Letpao Haokip and Commissioner H Dilip as well as the State Government for helping the people during the time of flood and urged all the clubs and organisations of various Leikais to offer every possible support to the authorities as well.
The members of Shiv Sena State Unit also observed two minutes silence in memory of the people who lost their lives in the recent flood.
