Imphal, June 13 2018:
All Manipur Muslims (Meitei Pangal) Welfare Association (AMPWA) observed World Day Against Child Labour at Hatta Masjid yesterday.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event, Chairperson of Manipur State Minority Commission, Dr Syed Burhanuddin said that the greatest crime is robbing the children of their right to freedom and play.
There are various Acts and laws against child labour but most of them are often useless, he claimed.
Under the Right to Education Act, children between the age of 6 to 14 have the right to free education.
As such the parents and the society must work to provide proper education to the children so as to bring development to the society.
Education is the back bone of a society.
As such it is imperative for the children to get primary level and secondary level education, he added.
He claimed that most of the Meitei Pangal lack proper education facilities but due to the arrival of the reservation policy, the situation is developing gradually.
They have been able to become doctors and engineers, he added.
Appealing all those concerned to refrain from keeping children below 14 years of age as domestic workers, Dr Syed Burhanuddin urged all to guide them towards education and to let the children fully enjoy their childhood.
Retired Additional Director Education Alhaj MA Janab Khan, vice president of AMPWA, Md Akhtar Hussain attended the event as the guest if honour and president respectively.
A total of 75 widows, orphans and child labourers were also provided refreshments and gift during the event.
