Imphal, April 12 2016:
Establishment of dog squad for Manipur Police
Department would go a long way in checking bomb blasts, drug
trafficking and acts of thievery, said Konsam Nandakishore who
once served as a dog handler in Manipur Police Department.
Together with seven other personnel of Manipur Police,
Nandakishore went for training at the BSF's National Training
Centre for Dogs at Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh in 1987.
After his retirement from Manipur Police, Nandakishore
opened a dog training centre at Tangkham.
Speaking to this reporter at his Tangkham dog training
centre today, Nandakishore said that all police/military estab-
lishments across the world use trained dogs for different
military operations.
In India too, all the military establishments including para-
military forces have their own dog squads.
The Government's focus was one tracking only when he
and the seven other personnel went for training and their
training module did not encompass handling explosives.
Nonetheless, trained dogs can check and detect transporta-
tion of drugs as well as explosives, Nandakishore said who
has so far trained around 1000 dogs of different breeds.
When he was in service there were instances where drugs
sent in the form of parcels were seized with the help of trained
dogs.
Given these precedents, there is a growing need for establishment of a dog squad for Manipur Police, he added.
