Imphal, January 12 2020:
Manipur Peoples' Democratic Front (MPDF) has demanded the State Government to do the needful to revive/re-establish the schools which the Government had abandoned, so as to ensure free and compulsory education to the children of the State.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, MPDF secretary Sapam Samungou conveyed that the Government has abandoned many schools or ensured their demise, like Tombisana High School, Bengali High School and Tondonsana Higher Secondary School etc.
If this goes on, despite the ever increasing population, how will the Government ensure free and compulsory education to children between the age group of 6 to 14 years under the Right To Education (RTE), he asked.
Alleging the authorities of being completely ignorant of the importance of education, he said that it is the duty of the Government to find out the reason behind the lack of students in Government school.
If the Government makes assurance to eradicate poverty but resorts to killing off the schools where the poor people send their children to study, it will only lead to problems, he claimed.
Samungou further claimed that it is not the teachers who will improve the Government school as the responsibilities lies with the Government officials concerned.
Asking what the Director of the Department concerned, ZEOs, and other officials have been doing instead of performing their duties efficiently all these times, the MPDF secretary alleged that the saying that education is the backbone of the society, seems to have lost its significance and meaning in Manipur.
As such, he demanded the State Government to take up necessary steps to revive/re-establish the schools it abandoned and ensure free and compulsory to the people.
