Imphal, April 10 2013:
In the backdrop of Delhi University's proposal to introduce Compulsory Hindi/MIL in its Undergraduate Courses, starting from the academic session 2013-2014, representatives of various students' bodies from North Eastern States today once again urged the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University to revise the proposed Compulsory Hindi/MIL language requirement, both for Credit Course and Non-Credit Course and insert Alternative English Course or other English-Medium Course, in lieu of the Compulsory Hindi/MIL requirements.
In a memorandum to the VC, the NE students' bodies pointed out that the various North-East Indian States are represented by mega- linguistic diversity, notwithstanding the fact that language is a composite and sensitive issue in politics and identity.
Highlighting that various North East States have their own language policy in educational set-ups, considering the fact that existing national language planning is incompatible with heterogeneous constituencies, the joint representation stated that contrary to popular perceptions, Hindi/MIL is evenly not implemented at Higher Secondary School Education level (10+2), least to mention, not even at Secondary School Education level (Matriculation) .
The memo also pointed out that most of the students from North-East studying at Delhi University are from different/respective Boards of School Education or Councils or Universitieswhere English is offered as both First, Second and Third Language(s) .
Urging the VC for revision of the proposed Compulsory Hindi/MIL language requirement, both for Credit Course and Non-Credit Course, the joint representation also insisted the VC to insert Alternative English Course or other English-Medium Course, in lieu of the Compulsory Hindi/MIL requirements.
The memorandum was signed by North East Students Committee Against Imposition of Compulsory Hindi/MILs; ASUD, AASAD, ABSUD, Eastern Nagaland Students Union, Delhi, MSAD, MSUD, DMZP, Mishing Students Association, Delhi; NSUD, SSUD, SSPP Jhq, Delhi and TSUD.
