An awareness programme on 'Violence and Crime Against women in Manipur' was organised by All Manipur Women Voluntary Association and its Saiton unit at Saiton Bazar community hall today.
speaking at the occasion, Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Manipur general secretary RK Landhoni alleged that Indian policy and abuse of power are some of the factors for the degeneration of Manipuri youths.
Regretting increasing number of youngsters as well as adults indulging in substance abuse consequently leading to chaos in the society including frequent instances of crime against women, she exuded confidence that conducting awareness would curb rate of undesired incidents.
While Saiton Primary School principal Memtombi emphasised on the need for instilling strong principle of morality of individual citizens so that women and children do not suffer acts of violence, Associate Professor (Economics) M Chinglen of Manipur University lamented rise in cases of violence against women in the Manipuri society.
Highlighting sharp disparity in the sex ratio informed to have been 66 males for a female as per 2012 census report, Prof Chinglen opined that spurt in female infanticide and gender discrimination might be one of the factors.
