Imphal, December 04 2019:
The Manipur People's Party (MPP) has reiterated that it is tooth and nail against the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the North East region and Manipur.
The political party also appealed to the State Government to take a concrete stand against the Bill, during the State Assembly Session and pile pressure on the Centre to refrain from implementing the Bill in any way.
Speaking to media persons at MPP office at Polo Ground Maning today, its general secretary Haobijam Gitajen said that the all political party delegates and MANPAC met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at around midnight yesterday.
During the meeting, the political parties placed their opinions and suggestions before the Union Home Minister, he said, adding that for MPP, he himself made it clear to Amit Shah that MPP is totally against the CAB as it will greatly impact the future of the indigenous people of the region and Manipur.
Gitajen claimed that after hearing the opinions of the political parties and MANPAC, Amit Shah explained that he understands the sentiments of the people of Manipur concerning the Bill.
Amit Shah then assured that steps will be taken up to ensure that the Bill does not affect the indigenous people of the North East and he also promised to take full responsibility, Gitajen added.
The Union Home Minister and NEDA Convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma also opined during the meeting that the hills of the State are already protected due to the presence of the MLR and LR Act and reasoned that implementation of an ILP like system will help in protection of the valley region.
Stating that the statement by the Union Home Minister indirectly shows that CAB will be passed for sure, Gitajen said that even if Amit Shah gave assurance that the Bill will not affect Manipur, MPP will oppose the Bill until and unless the Central Government makes a concrete announcement concerning the Bill.
