2,500 trees to be planted at Keibul

Keibul Lamjao National Park & Sanctuary staff, Meira Paibis and social workers under Bishnupur Forest Division began celebrating the 70th Van Mahotsav at Khongjaingamba Ching, Keibul today.
About 1,000 saplings were planted to achieve the target - 2,500 trees during the event.
Bishnupur District Forest Officer Soibam Rebika Chanu, Keibul Lamjao National Park Range No 1 Range Officer N Birachandra Singh, Range No 2 Range Officer S Nabakumar Singh, Deputy Range Officer Range No 1 Gyanic, Ward Member H Premkumar Singh, ex Zila Parishad Member N Indira Devi, Meira Paibi secretary N Memma Devi, Environment Social Reformation And Sangai Protection Forum secy S Bk Singh and others participated in the tree plantation programme.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Conservator Of Forest Dr Rebika Soibam Chanu said that the programme is being conducted as part of the 70th Van Mahotsav celebrated across the country.
The saplings are mostly of fruits which the Sangai can also eat, she said stressing the need to conserve the heritage site as well as the Sangai.
The fruit trees will also attract the migratory birds, she said.
Pointing out the harmful effects of climate change and global warming, she encouraged all to plant trees and conveyed that the target of planting 2,500 trees will be reached by June 7.The district has exceeded its target of planting 15,000 saplings this year, she said informing that about 22,000 saplings have been planted so far.
She also urged all to take proper care of the saplings they planted to ensure their growth and future of the generations to come.
