Imphal, November 29 2011:
In spite of its location in a sensitive and important area, lack of necessary infrastructures has been one defining feature of Noney (Longmai) Police Station.
Located around 65 kms from Imphal along National Highway 37 in Tamenglong district, Noney is the first stop where travellers going to Jiribam from Imphal get down for a little rest.
In Noney police station, there are around 70 personnel including 30 policemen and 40 VDFs under overall command of one Inspector.
The new building of the police station has been constructed on the land donated by the people of the surrounding area but it is yet to be inaugurated by the Home Department, Secretary of Longmai Village Authority Ading Golmei lamented, while talking to this reporter.
He pointed out that Noney is a very sensitive place where various crimes take place.
However, in the absence of an office of SDPO, Noney police have to go all the way to Nungba police station for registering any cases spending more than 20 litres of petrol or diesel.
Moreover, there is no adequate vehicle in Noney police station.
Earlier, one Maruti Gypsy and a 407 mini-Tata were used.
But the mini-Tata has been set on fire by the blockade supporters on November 4 .
Another thing that the villagers are very unhappy about is the failure of the Home Department to issue service guns to the personnel manning the police station, the Village Authority Secretary informed, and contended that equipping the police with stick instead of gun is like giving free hands to criminal activities.
There is also no proper boundary fencing around the police station of Noney, especially on its southern side, the Secretary pointed out.
The water required for drinking as well as for other purposes by the personnel posted in Noney police station is fetched from a gorge which runs dry in February and March.
As there is no water supply scheme in Noney, there is an urgent need for construction of a water reservoir for public use by PHE department of the government, Ading Golmei noted.
On other infrastructural requirements in Noney, the Village Authority Secretary further pointed out that there is no regular power supply and there is shortage of doctors in the lone primary health centre as well as teachers in Tengkhongjang Government Higher Secondary School.
