Following the repeated negligence of the authority concerned to clean Thoubal river which is gravely affecting the people using the water from the river, numerous students of different school in the district, joined hands and protested alongNH2 Imphal Moreh road by forming a human chain and blocked half the road.
The protest was organised under the aegis of different student organisation namely AMSU, DESAM and MSF by extending its support to the continuous movement of Thoubal River Conservation Committee.
Forming human chain from Thoubal Haokha till Thoubal Bazar, the students raised slogans reading, "Make Thoubal river water clean", "Dirty water leads to dangerous diseases", "Our river our life", "Thoubal river is dying, lets revive it" etc.
Speaking to media persons, one of the students' organisation leader stated that the authority concerned has been notified repeatedly and urged to bring a remedial solution to the present condition of Thoubal river before April 26.In view of the rapid pollution of Thoubal river, he further stated that many civil organisations and the student community have been protesting against the rapid deterioration of the river and seeking a positive action from the authority concerned.
The steps taken by the Govt have brought only temporary solutions which were met with criticism from Thoubal River Conservation Committee, AMSU, DESAM and MSF.
The student leader reiterated that the extraction of sand from the upper part of the riverbed has caused the river to turn muddy and made it unclean.
The students' organisation s have urged the State Government to stop turning a blind eye to the grievances of the Thoubal people and halt the illegal extraction of sand, cleaning of pebbles, rocks etc at the earliest before it becomes too late to save Thoubal river.
It also threatened to take up stringent-actions and continue supporting the stand of Thoubal River Conservation Committee till their demands are met.
Students from Ruda Academy Thoubal, Little Star Higher Secondary School, Vision Creative School of Science, New Era Higher Secondary School, Ananda Purna English School, Brilliant Academy and Elight Foundation School were present in the rally.
