Landslides cleared, stranded vehicles reach Jiribam safely

Imphal, June 22 2012:
Vehicles, which remained stranded along NH 37 near Nung Dolan area due to massive landslides, have reached Jiribam safely after the landslides were cleared.
Owning to landslides which occurred along 10 different spots, vehicular traffic along NH 37 (Imphal-Jiri Road) remained blocked since 14 June midnight.
Even though landslides from other places were cleared, the area near Nung Dolan remained blocked on account of huge rocks crumbling down.
The rocks have to be broken into pieces using dynamites by personnel of 115 BRTF for reopening the road to traffic again since yesterday evening.
When Hueiyen Lanpao visited the area to take stock of the prevailing situation, only 10 BRTF personnel were seen using excavators and bull dozers to remove the rocks from the road while Nungba police and CRPF personnel deployed in the area watching the scene without giving any help.
Around 550 trucks and other light motor vehicles including vans, Tata Sumos, Jeeps and Tata DIs were found stranded along the NH 37 due to the landslides.
Meanwhile, Manipur Driver Welfare Association and All Manipur Highway Goods Carrier Welfare Organisation extended all possible help including rice, dal and medicines, etc to the drivers and handymen of the stranded vehicles.
The spot where landslide occurred at Nung Dolan area is around 140 kms from Imphal and 80 kms off Jiribam.
With onset of monsoons, the condition of the National Highway stretch has come deplorable with puddles and potholes everywhere.
