State RHO clinches AD India Mahaveer Award

Rural Health Organisation (RHO), Naoremthong Laishram Leirak, Uripok, Imphal West, has been chosen for 21st All India Mahaveer Awards under 'Community & Social Service' category.
RHO's welfare services, especially in the remote hilly areas of Manipur, largely benefited the tribal poor, SC & ST populations.
Through awareness programme focusing on substance abuse and HIV/AIDS, it has counselled 3800 addicts, treated over 2300 addicts and created awareness among 10200 highly vulnerable groups.
RHO's short stay home has sheltered and rehabilitated over 800 disadvantaged women and 200 children, educated 30 girl children (ST & OBC) through home-based income generating works for mothers; secured self-employment for 150 deserving ST/ SC/OBC women through vocational training programmes and rehabilitated more than 90 child labours, among other welfare measures.
Other awardees of the 21st Mahaveer Awards are Shiranee Pereira of 'People for Animals - Chennai under 'Non Violence & Vegetarianism' category, Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundation Trust - Hyderabad under 'Medicine' category and Anand Kumar - Patna under 'Education' category.
Each of the four awards carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakhs, a citation and a memento.
The awards will be presented in a grand function to be organised soon.
The winners were selected based on the magnitude and the impact their services had brought for the betterment of lives of the disadvantaged and the under privileged of the society.
The selection jury comprises eminent personalities representing different domains and headed by Justice MN Venkatachaliah, former Chief Justice of India.
Four awardees were selected from a total of 307 nominations received from 22 States and 2 Union Territories of the country.
