Jiri Treaty 1833 remembered

Jiribam, April 18 2019:
Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Jiribam District Council and Jiribam Women Association of Kangleipak (JIMWAK) today jointly observed "3rd Jiri Treaty 1833" at KSA's office, Jiribam.
JIMWAK, president, Th Jina Devi, KSA Jiribam District Council, president, L Bonson Singh, advisor, L Surendra Kumar Singh and finance secretary, Thiyam Johnson graced the event as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Th Jina Devi lauded KSA, Jiribam for taking up several works for the welfare and upliftment of youth and public of the district and urged all the womenfolk and Meira Paibis to extend their helping hands to the KSA in all its works.

While saying that the observance was organised to give awareness about the Jiri treaty 1833 to the masses of the State, L Bonson Singh added that KSA will continue to observe the event in the coming years too so that the same is included in the history of the State.
Several other dignitaries too spoke at the observance.
Jiri Treaty of 18 April 1833, a trade and defence treaty, was signed between Maharaja Gambhir Singh and the British Government.
Under the treaty, Gambhir Singh withdrew his Thana at Chandrapur in exchange for Jiribam (Jiribam was transferred to Manipur).
Barak River was made inter-State boundary between Cachar and Manipur.
It also established trade and security alliance between the two Governments.
