Imphal, January 12 2019:
The State Unit of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) has submitted a memorandum to its National president on the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 cleared by the Lok Sabha recently.
In its memorandum, LJP Manipur State Unit pointed out that the North-Eastern States have been grappling influx of illegal immigrants for a long time.
The Bill passed in the Lok Sabha has caused widespread unrest and protest in the entire North-East States.
The Bill was introduced in haste and passed in Lok Sabha without respecting the sentiments of the people.
The situation may escalate if the Government/ Centre persist on introducing and passing the Bill, said the memorandum.
The indigenous inhabitants of Assam and the rest of North-East are under serious threat of becoming a minority in their own States like the case of Tripura.
The limited land & resources, demographic composition, culture and identities of the North-East people will be in grave danger if such 'anti-people & anti-North-East Bill' becomes an Act, it said.
The LJP State Unit urged its party leaders to defer the Bill from tabling in Rajya Sabha and refer it to a select committee to further examine and review the Bill in its entirety.
It also voiced for 'public hearings' in all the North-Eastern States involving the civil societies of the region.
It also asked for assurance that North-East will not be a dumping ground of illegal immigrants in the name of safeguarding and protecting the refugees from other countries! The State Unit urged for appropriate laws and measures to safeguard the interest and security of the indigenous people of the NE .
