Imphal, January 11 2012:
To make the Mid-Day Meal Scheme more complete and successful, the Government had decided to enhance community participation in implementing the scheme.
According to a reliable source in Education Department, half of the amount invested in Mid-Day Meal scheme by different departments and agencies of the Government of India was either wasted or lost without receiving any positive return.
Taking due note of the amount gone waste, the Government held a meeting at Port Blair on January 2 and 3, and discussed about the possible remedies to redress the lapses.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Mid-Day Meal Director of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Deputy Secretary, Under Secretary, Consultants, officials from Andaman Nicobar, Maharastra and North Eastern States related with the Mid-Day Meal scheme participated in the meeting.
The meeting deliberated on enhancing community participation while formulating Mid-Day Meal plan for 2012-13 .
By enhancing community participation, misleading reports like providing meals to all students of a school etc can be verified.
It can also address the loophole because of which 50 per cent of the amount invested in the scheme is either misappropriated or wasted, the gathering noted.
