Imphal, May 10 2014 :
The two-day 79th annual session of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad began today at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, MLA T Mangibabu and Parishad president Prof Elangbam Dinamani as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Addressing the gathering, O Ibobi stated that Manipur is a land inhabited by different communities with their own dialects/languages, culture, religious practices and it has rich literature of its own.
Stating that, driven by his passion of Manipuri literature, he sought special permission from the ECI to attend the annual session, Ibobi asserted that he felt privileged to attend the session.
Litterateurs and visionaries of yesteryears set up the Parishad 79 years ago and the fruits of their efforts are being enjoyed by the present generation.

It would be no exaggeration to say Manipuri literature and the land's art forms are well known all over India and beyond, he asserted.
The well being as well as ills of a society are reflected in its art forms and literature.
A nation's origin, their culture, traditions and religious practices can be gleaned easily after studying their literature.
Whether a State is progressive or backward is also reflected in its literature.
The CM also appealed to all the writers to bring out high quality literary products which can give new knowledge, resolve outstanding issues and ultimately restore peace in the society.
MLA T Mangibabu attributed the present status of Manipuri literature to the efforts of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad.
He went on to claim that Manipuri Sahitya Parishad is the father of Manipuri literature.
Observing that only a handful of older writers have been working on Manipuri literature, Mangibabu expressed serious concern if there would be no one to work on Manipuri literature after the expiry of these handful of senior litterateurs.
He also conveyed keen desire for the younger generations to study and work on Manipuri literature.
English seems to be gaining popularity at the expense of Manipuri.
The younger generations need to learn both English and Manipuri and they should give special attention and labour for promotion and growth of Manipuri language, Mangibabu added.
