Imphal, January 07 2015:
As part of the initiative to preserve, protect and enrich the Tarao language, the Tarao festival will be held on Feb 21 at TRI Hall to coincide with the International Mother Language Day.
This was decided during the executive meeting of Joint Committee for Protection, Promotion, Preservation and Revitalisation of Tarao Language and Culture held at Leishok Ching, Chandel district yesterday.
Chairman of Tarao Culture and Literature Society, L Morre Tarao said that the statue of a tribal deity put up at Kakching Garden is Shangkhu Leima of Tarao tribe.
It is very unfortunate that the picture of Shangkhu Leima deity is included in the calendar when the Tarao tribe leaders and authority of Kakching Garden are discussing the matter, he said.
Asserting that the Tarao tribe, although small, deserves respect, Morre pointed out that the dresses of Shangkhu Leima are same as the dresses of Tarao women.
During the Tarao festival, the Prof Subhakrishna Memorial Journalist Award for best documentation in tribal and endangered languages would also be presented with a cash incentive of Rs 10,000.Village chiefs, convenor of Tribal and Endangered Language Promotion Board Dr Th Chandramani, chairman of Tarao Art and Culture, L Morre, office bearers of Tarao Tribe Union, Parkham, Prem Tarao, Advocate Ajit Borasa and other distinguished guests will attend the festival.
