Imphal, November 29 2020:
DESAM has hailed the decision of Education Minister Sorokhaibam Rajen to discuss in the Cabinet the probability of naming Meitei Mayek as an official script which will allow competitive examinations to be held in Meitei Mayek.
It may be mentioned that DESAM served an ultimatum to the Chief Minister in March to make Meitei Mayek an official script by amending the Manipur Official Language Act 1979 and urged to discuss the same in the previously held Assembly session.
DESAM appealed to the Education Minister to take the matter seriously and present the issue to the Cabinet and Assembly to amend the Official Language Act.
They have met with the Minister- regarding the issue as well.
Since the Act has not been amended those who want to opt for Meitei Mayek-in optional paper in civil services examinations conducted by -MPSC and UPSC are not able to do so which violates the rights of those students who have pursued Meitei Mayek at graduation level.
In the official papers of the Government one is not able to write in Meitei Mayek, it added.
DESAM strongly appealed to the Government and the authorities concerned to amend the Act at the earliest and to make Meitei Mayek an official script.
