Angry students detain two officials of Directorate of Education (U)

Imphal, September 29 2015:
Two officials of the Directorate of Education (U) were detained by irate students of Birmangol College on Tuesday.
They had been demanding the appointment of a regular Principal for the college.
Additional Director of Directorate of Education (U), T Ajit and one of his subordinates were confined inside the college campus by a group of students in the afternoon.
The two officials were on an inspection visit to the institute when the incident occurred.
Students of the college have been demanding the Government to appoint a regular Principal for the institute for weeks.
They are imposing a class boycott agitation over the demand.

On September 23, the agitating students met Education Minister M Okendro and Directorate of Education (U) Commissioner and Director as well.
In the meeting, it was agreed that a regular Principal would be arranged for the college, besides setting up of a governing body to look after other issues of the institute.
Enraged by the non-fulfillment of the demands, the students launched a fresh class boycott campaign on Tuesday.
Earlier, the students called on the two officials of Education (U).
Birmangol Students' Union secretary Laishram Dhaneshwori claimed that during the meeting the two officials told the student leaders that the regular Principal could not be arranged .
This has had infuriated the students.
They locked the college gate and detained the two officials.
The students shouted slogans in the college campus demanding immediate resignation of Education Minister M Okendro on moral grounds and immediate appointment of a regular Principal.
Later, the officials were allowed to leave the college campus at about 4 pm.
The students said if the demands are not met, they will continue the agitation.
