Constituency level convention on HIV&AIDS held

A One Day Constituency Level Convention on HIV & AIDS was held at the community hall, Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai, today.
The function which was organized by the Manipur Legislators' Forum on HIV & AIDS (MLFA) was graced by Speaker I Hemochandra and Deputy Chairman, State Planning Board, Manipur, Bijoy Koijam as the Chief Guest and President respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, I Hemochandra appealed to the general public to eradicate HIV & AIDS from the state of Manipur and bring up a healthy future generation.
MLA Dr I Ibohalbi said that if a work is done with a sense of commitment, one is sure to succeed.
In the year 1999, the Needle Syringe Exchange Programme (NSEP) was taken up in the state.
The programme was blocked by the National Aids Control Society (NACO) and all funds for the said programme were halted by the World Bank.
But after the government of Manipur convinced the concern authority about the ground realities in the state of Manipur being very different from the rest of the world, the NSEP was further resumed.
Later on after seeing the success of NACP in Manipur, the programme was further implemented in other parts of the world.
Abhiram Mongjam, Joint Director, MACS, as a resource person said that HIV & AIDS which was earlier prevalent among the drug users and CSWs, it has now crossed the general population.
He said that if sexually transmitted diseases are controlled and treated the cases of women acquiring HIV can be drastically reduced.
