Chingai (Ukhrul), October 25 2011:
The much speculated by-polls to the controversial Autonomous District Council (ADC) has concluded without any untoward incident and recorded a high turnout of voters despite the presence of volunteers deputed by United Naga Council (UNC) to derail the election on Monday.
According to the official sources, the ADC by-elections have been conducted peacefully and registered a good turnout of voters.
''The by-poll in Ukhrul district is by and large peaceful despite being declared sensitive,'' said Chingai SDO L.Darsinso Aimol.
In both the Chingai and Phaibung constituency, the electorates in the two Naga-dominated ADC constituencies, while ignoring the UNC's boycott call, have exercised their franchise.
In Poi village, an NSCN cadre was also reportedly assaulted up by local youths after the former snatched the voter's list from the electorates.
Sources said the NSCN cadre was beaten black and blue by the local youths before he was rescued by visiting representatives of Tangkhul organisations.
In Chingai, the home polling station of Congress candidate Wilson Shatsang recorded 96% voting turnout, while Poi recorded 93% .
The latter is the home polling of independent candidate Ningtam.
Of the 10 polling stations in Chingai constituency, only four polling stations registered a voting.
Reliable sources said the polling agents at Namrei were reportedly detained and stopped from reporting to the polling station by NSCN-IM.
Sources from Senapati district authorities said Phaibung Khullen constituency registered 64.62 percent vote.
Meanwhile, the UNC has conceded that the Nagas have exercised their voting rights in the ADC by-polls.
The Naga body was left with nothing to comment when asked about their reaction.
For security reason, according to an official source, the counting will take place at Imphal Deputy Commissioner office on October 31 .
