Meritorious students from Ukhrul district felicitated

Imphal, July 16 2011:
Forty seven students of 14 Litan area villages in Manipur's Ukhrul district who have passed the recently declared High School Leaving Certificate(HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate(HSSLC) examinations in first and second division were feted with the Meritorious certificates and gifts today.
The award distribution function was held at a small community hall inside Litan Sareikhong Times campus located along the picturesque Litan hill station,around 40 km north-east of the state capital along Impha-Ukhrul road,today morning.
Lauding the performance of the students, Ukhrul MLA Danny Shaiza who graced the function as the chief guest have expressed to extend possible support in searching higher studies for the students in the state.
He also appealed the students to uplift the image of the community through whatever they've learn in their respective community churches.
MLA also donated some amount to the organizing committee of the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) Ukhrul.
The Kuki Inpi Ukhrul President Kamthang Haokip,Executive Engineer of PWD Wungshim Kasar and former KSO President Ukhrul Jamlet Khongsai also spoke on the occasion.
Speaking to this reporter,Seiginmang Haokip of Lamlai Chingphu village,who passed his matriculation examination in first division said that his aim in life is to become an army officer to help his friends and village.
This 17 year old second son of a widow Tinjengneng become the second student from his native village who passed 'matric' in first division after Paokhanlen Baite who is presently doing MSc in Delhi.The other Class X and XII students who passed in the first division are Lhinghoithem Baite of G Pashing village,Ningneichan Haokip of Zalenbung and Lamneithem Khongsai of Mongkot Chepu village.
Kuki students of Litan area villages have poor performance in the HSLC and HSSLC examinations comparing to others due to lack of encouragement from various fronts.
In view of the development, KSO Ukhrul has taken up steps to organize such award distribution function in the recent past.
"Lack of financial support from their respective parents or guardians is one reason for the poor performance", Lunminlal Baite,Edcation Secretary of KSO Ukhrul said.
"So awareness on education is need of the hour" .
Meanwhile sharing the grievances of his village, Hemkhonthang Baite,chief of Litan Sareikhong said that they're facing scarcity of drinking water even if they resides on the bank of Thoubal river.
"Presently we're harvesting the rain water for the immediate need",he said.
"Otherwise we depend on Thoubal river round the year" .
The visiting MLA Danny Shaiza on the other hand considering the demand of the village Chief assured that the existing community of the village will be extended to a standard size soon.
