Capacity building prog concludes

A two-day capacity building programme on wildlife crime, investigation and intelligence collection, organised by Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), Regional office, Kolkata, concluded at the conference hall of State Forest Department yesterday.
Speaking at the closing function, Regional Deputy Director (WCCB/ER) Nishant Verma expressed hope that the capacity building programme would help curbing of poaching and smuggling of wildlife products.
He said that the participants would gain knowledge on investigation and arrest of poachers and smugglers.
Conservator of Forest/Wildlife L Lukhoi said that the Forest Department has to take help from the police and paramilitary forces at the time of arrest of poachers and smugglers due to shortage of manpower.
He added that police have been empowered by the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, to arrest poachers and smugglers.
Regional Deputy Director WCCB/ER, Kolkata N Verman, retired SP (CBI) SR Majumdar, retired SP BB Chetri, Scientific Officer L Bilashini Chanu and WCCB Guwahati Assistant Director Dr KK Sarma spoke as resource persons at today's technical session.
The programme was organised in collaboration with the State Forest Department with an aim to strengthen wildlife crime enforcement, investigation and intelligence collection.
At the inauguration function held yesterday, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Dr Bala Prasad attended as the chief guest and Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest/Wildlife PN Prasad as the president and Conservator of Forest/Wildlife L Lukhoi as the guest of
honour.
52 participants from the Forest Department, Police, Customs, Postal Department, Assam Rifles, CISF, Judiciary and other stake holders took part in the training programme.
In association with the State Forest Department, WCCB/ER will conduct a one-day Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI) sensitization programme on prevention of wildlife crime and role of PRI's at Keibul Lamjao National Park on December 10 .
Elected representatives of different Panchayat bodies of the villages located adjoining to the National Park will be sensitised at the programme.
