Death Anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh observed

The 179th Death Anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh, who chased out the marauding Awas (Burmese) from the kingdom of Manipur to end '7 Years of Devastation' and to bring back the scattered Manipuris together once again, was observed at the memorial complex of the late king located at Langthabal today.
Organised under the joint aegis of State Archeology and Maharaja Gambhir Singh Memorial Trust, the observance function was marked by offering of floral tributes to the photo of Maharaja Gambhir Singh and Nara Singh.
Tarpan was also offered at the pond located inside the memorial complex.
A contingent of Manipur Rifles gave gun salute on the occasion.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the observance function, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar stated that the reign of Maharaja Gambhir Singh is regarded as the most important part in the history of Manipur.
The sacrifices he made for his motherland is worth remembering.
He waged war against the mighty Burmese forces and brought back the lost glory and sovereignty of Manipur.
So, the historical importance of Maharaj Gambhir Singh needs to be discussed at length so as to bring about a bright future.

The Minister further stated that just remembering Maharaja Gambhir Singh is not the need of the hour.
We all need to understand the past and perform our duties with sincerity and with a sense of sacrifice and do whatever we can for the sake of our motherland.
MLA K Thamarjit, who attended the function as one of the Guests of Honour, noted that the present Memorial Complex of Maharaja Gambhir Singh needs to be developed.
The Statue of Gambhir Singh should be engraved with some words which tells the whole story so that visitors can easily make out who was he and what was his contribution to Manipur.
The MLA also pointed out the need to identify the important places inside the complex and made known to the general public.
Since the place was the Capital of Manipur at one time, it has great historical significance and as such there is the need to develop it suitably.
MLA K Shyam; Director of Art and Culture, Dr K Sobita and social activist RK Ranendrajit were also present on the occasion as Guests of Honour.
Cultural programmes were exhibited to mark the commemorative event.
