Imphal, December 08 2017:
In connection with a PIL taken up by the High Court of Manipur against illegal felling of trees and quarrying activities at hill sides along National Highways, a Division Bench of the High Court has named the Chief Secretary and the DGP as respondents number 5 and number 6 .
The Division Bench comprising of Acting Chief Justice N Kotiswar and Justice Kh Nobin passed a ruling to this effect today .
The ruling was passed after a case was put up before the Bench by the Re- gistrar on the basis of newspaper reports about defo- restation and quarrying activities which have been going on continuously at hill sides along National Highways in defiance of the order passed by the High Court on August 30 this year.
The Division Bench viewed it as a serious matter and deemed it appropriate to name the Chief Secretary and the DGP as respondents so that concerted and coordinated efforts can be taken up to prevent such illegal felling of trees and quarrying activities .
The Court listed the matter for hearing on December 18 .
Acting on the same PIL, the Division Bench passed an order on November 29 directing all concerned to stop quarrying activities along National Highways immediately
Apart from issuing a notice to the North Eastern Railways to submit a reply by December 18, it further directed the DCs and SPs concerned to ensure that there are no quarrying activities at hill sides along National Highways.
