Imphal, July 06 2018:
Pointing out that total shutdown of Manipur University campus (which entered its 3 6th day today) can ruin the career of the students, Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has strongly condemned the negligence shown by the State Government towards the grave issue.
On the other hand, demanding the State Government and the Central Government to bring a positive conclusion to the current imbroglio at the university by July 15, DESAM has warned that failure will lead to intense agitation from the midnight of July 15 and the Central Government will have to bear full responsibility for any untoward incident which might occur.
Speaking to media persons at DESAM office at Sagolband Meino Leirak today, its secretary general Sheetal Oinam said that it has been 36 days since Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) launched its protest levelling various charges against the current Vice Chancellor and demanding his immediate resignation from the post.
However, DESAM strongly condemns the lack of any kind of response from the Ministry of Human Resource Development till date despite the shut down of the one of the highest seat of learning in Manipur for such a long time.
This shows that Manipur is under the 'colonial rule' of the Central Government and it is high time for the students to give all their mite to earn their right to education, Sheetal added.
DESAM regards the current protest by MUSU, Manipur University Teachers' Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staff Association (MUSA) as reasonable and the association is of the view that this protest will bring a positive change to the university, Sheetal said and appealed to all those concerned to try and refrain from ruining the academic atmosphere of the students as much as possible.
He demanded the State Government to pressure the Central Government towards bringing a positive solution to the current imbroglio at the university at the earliest.
The students of the university as well as that of 86 colleges and institutes affiliated to the university have been facing immense hardships due to failure to hold semester examination, failure to declare examination results and other difficulties in obtaining necessary certificates due to the current impasse at the university.
If the situation continues further, it will have an adverse effect on the lives of the students, he added.
Sheetal informed that DESAM held a meeting today and resolved to take up necessary steps for the welfare of the students and the people.
On the other hand, Sheetal added that a meeting of all the university affiliated colleges and institutions of the State as well the student organisations will hold a meeting at 11 am of July 9 at DESAM head office to discuss the current situation prevailing in the university and its impact on the life and career of the students.
