Under the economic development programme of the Directorate of Minority and Other Backward classes (MOBC), rickshaws have been distributed to 100 youths of BPL families seeking self-employment.
Of the 100 beneficiaries, 60 belong to minority groups while 40 belong to OBC families.
The cycle distribution function held at 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground was graced by Governor Gurbachan Jagat as chief guest, MOBC Minister Md Allaudin Khan as president and MLA M Prithiviraj as guest of honor.
Speaking at the occasion, Governor Gurbachan Jagat encouraged the educated youths who have come out boldly in search of self employment.
Taking part in the function, secretary of the All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers' and Pullers' Association AK Kom ex pressed happiness at distributing rickshaws to poor people who cannot buy rickshaws.
He conveyed satisfaction at selecting deserving ben eficiaries without resorting to nepotism or favoritism.
Even though there are around 30,000 people pulling rickshaws for their livelihood, there is no welfare scheme for the rickshaw pullers, AK Kom lamented.
In his presidential speech, Md Allaudin Khan sought people's support in the economic development programme taken up by MOBC.
